The Gobi Dinos

The weird and wonderful beasts that once roamed the South Gobi include
huge duck-billed Hadrosaurs, and also Anklysaurs, which was up to 25 feet tall,
armour-plated and had a club-like tail, which acted like a giant mace.
The sheep-sized Protoceraptops, with a distinctive frilled head,
huge long-necked sauropods like Nemegtosaurus, which may have grown
to a weight of 90 tonnes, three-toed therapods such as the mighty Tarbosaurus,
a carbon copy of a Tyrannosaurus Rex, with a 1.2 m-long skull
packed with razor sharp teeth up to 15 cm long continue the list.

Day 1 - Arrival
Upon arrival at the Buyant Ukhaa Airport in Ulaanbaatar, you will be met by your guide and transferred to your hotel in downtown. After check in, unwind yourself in the hotel after jetlag. We will enjoy an impressive performance of traditional music and dance at 6 pm followed by Welcome Dinner.

Day 2: Ulaanbaatar Sightseeing
Today we will do sightseeings in the city, visiting the Mongolia's biggest Monastery Gandantegchilin luckily survived the Stalinist purges in 1930s. Further we will visit the Winter Palace Museum of Bogd Khan - the last Holy King of Mongolia. After the museum we will go to the Zaisan Memorial which lies to the south of the city and offers the best views of Ulaanbaatar like on a palm. It is a foothill of the Bogd Khan Mountain, oldest nature preserve in the country, perhaps in the world, since 1778. After lunch, we will visit the National Museum of History. The rest of the day will be free at leisure. Dinner will be at the hotel.

Day 3 – Flight to South Gobi, Bayan Zag
Today we will fly to the South Gobi. The flight takes one-and-a-half hours and our local driver will meet us at the airport and we will be heading for the Bayan Zag. Better known to the world as the Flaming Cliffs, so named by the explorer Roy Chapman Andrews in 1920s, this area is renowned worldwide for the number of dinosaur bones and eggs found. We will stay overnight in Bayan Zag Ger Camp.

Day 4 – Togrogiin Shiree - Khongor Sand Dunes
Today we will drive west to Khongor Sand Dunes with en route visit to another famous dinosaur graveyard Togrogiin Shiree where the most famous discovery of “Fighting Dinosaurs” was unearthed in 1971. This remarkable fossil is of an 80 million-year-old grass-eating Protoceratops and flesh-eating Velociraptor, famous by Jurassic park, locked in a mortal combat. The specimen is listed as a national treasure and displayed at the Museum of Natural History in Ulaanbaatar. Keep your eyes open for the wildlife when you approach near the Khongor Sand Dunes. If you are lucky enough, you might spot the rare khulan or the Asiatic wild asses on the horizon and ibexes grazing on the rocky mountain of Baruun Saikhan. Overnight stay in a Ger Camp near the Sand Dunes.

Day 5 – Khongor sand Dunes
Today we will discover the magnificent sand dunes on camelback. In the evening, we will climb up to the Singing Dune, one of the highest dunes, to see the unparalleled vistas of the surrounding area. The moving sand in the wind gives out a definite note and produces a sound similar to an airplane passing by, that's why this particular part of the dunes is called "Singing" or "Sounding" would be more precise.

Day 6 - Sevrei - Narandaats, 220 km
After these 2 nights at the Khongor Sand Dunes we will hit the road to west but we will cross the dunes first. The only marble stele with runic inscriptions found in the Gobi desert is located 6 km south-east of the small Gobi settlement, Sevrei, named after the magnificent rocky mountain on its north. Surrounded by shallow hills, Narandaats is an oasis near the Mt. Nemegt, the largest Euroasian dinosaur cemetery ever uncovered. Several remains of Tarbosaurus were identified in this valley by a joint Italian-French and Mongolian palaeontological mission in 1991. Since this place is off the beaten tracks of tourists, we will set up our tented camp in the next few days and discover the surroundings. See the gorgeous Gobi sunset and watch the millions of bright stars above you in the night.

Day 7 - Hermen Tsav - Zulganai 110 km
Today we will explore the impressive Hermen Tsav – a range of canyons of strange shapes, in rosy-red colors, burned deeply in the sun and its fascinating plant species and rock formations. Cool off yourself in the water of the Zulganai River with a beautiful dense forest of cane and willow. Overnight stay at the Zulganai oasis.

Day 8 - Bugiin tsav - Ikh Bayan
Today in the morning, we will explore another rich-with-fossils place – Bugiin Tsav with bright and green cliffs. In the afternoon we will drive to the Valley of Inscriptions at the Mt. Ikh Bayan in Bayankhongor Province. We will explore a series of well-preserved rock engravings and petroglyphs dating from 3000 BC at the open air gallery in the canyon. We will erect our tents near the valley.

Day 9 - Khongor Sand Dunes
Today we will drive back to Khongor Sand Dunes via a wide-open terrain with a dead volcano Khatan Suudal (Queen’s Seat). Look out for the wild asses, camels, black tailed antelopes, white gazelles and zam lizards, which inhabit the area. You deserve a real hot shower and a comfort of a real bed at the Ger Camp near the dunes.

Day 10 - Yolyn Am (Lammergeier Valley)
Today we will drive to Yol Valley at the Mt. Zuun Saikhan. This valley is famous for its breathtaking beauty and astonishing scenery - the thick ice in the middle of the Gobi that exists for most of the year. Visit a small museum of Natural History which displays interesting findings and stuffed animals including a number of dinosaur bones and eggs. From the parking area deep in the valley, a pleasant half-an-hour walk takes you to the gorge with a thick ice that exists until late July. See the aimag's non-human residents like ibexes, argali - mountain sheep and birds in their natural habitat. Overnight stay at the Khan Bogd Ger Camp near the valley.

Day 11 – Return to Ulaanbaatar
We will take a morning flight to Ulaanbaatar. Upon arrival in UB, you will be met at the airport and transferred to your hotel. In the afternoon we will visit the Museum of Natural History with a rich collection of dinosaur bones, skeletons and eggs found in the places you just have visited in the Gobi. After that we will visit Zanabazar Fine Art Museum that has a world-class collection of paintings, carvings and sculptures. The rest of the day is free for leisure. You may do some shopping. Pick up some cashmere, souvenirs and other excellent items that will remind you Mongolia back home. Dinner will be at the Chingis Khaan Restaurant with live music and full of atmosphere.

Day 12 – Departure
After breakfast at the hotel you will be transferred to the airport for your departure. Whisper Bayartai to Mongolia and have a nice journey back home. Tell your fascinating stories about Mongolia to you family and friends. You are always welcome to Mongolia!
